Why You Shouldn’t Sandblast Brick Walls

Oftentimes when people take graffiti removal into their own hands, they use improper methods that wind up doing more harm than good. For example, there are plenty of videos online that will tell you that sandblasting brick is an effective method for removing paint. The truth is you should never use this abrasive method on brick — particularly old brick.

When bricks are made, they are baked – much like a loaf of bread. When you picture a loaf of bread, you likely picture the outside layer, or the crust, as being more solid and strong than the inside. The same thing happens to brick. Bricks have a harder outside that protects their softer inside. So while sandblasting can remove paint from brick, it also removes this hard, protective coating and exposes the soft inside of the brick. The inside of the brick is left exposed to the elements and begins to crumble and wear away.

Some may think they’ll be able to save a brick wall by applying sealer after, but that can cause more damage as well. Old brick and lime mortar are very breathable building materials that are constantly taking in and expelling water through both sides of the wall. If you seal up one side of the wall, then you prevent that natural breathability from happening. Moisture builds up within the brick on the underside of the sealer and minerals are deposited just below the surface of the sealer. Eventually, this build-up can cause the exterior 1/4″ or more of the brick to be forced off the wall and fall to the ground.
